It wasn't all that many years ago when polished stone countertops first began to appear in homes on a regular basis. They had always been around but it was only in the past few decades that the technology was developed to make them as affordable as they now are. There are also now so many types and styles to select from as well, which can make choosing so hard to do.
Granite Stone Countertops
One very popular style of stone counter top is granite. It seems to have the best of everything. Its beautiful, durable and comes in a number of different shades and textures from light mottled gray, to dark black. However; granite can also be the most expensive and this particularly holds true with the darker shades.
Its the Iron
This is due to the amount of iron in the darker colored granites, which makes it harder and more difficult to quarry, cut, mill and polish. Also, one drawback of granite stone countertops is that they can be stained by some kitchen liquids that contain acids such as coffee and vinegar.
New Cultured Stone Countertops
One area of stone counter tops that has seen great advancements is in the “cultured” or man made stone countertops. While they are man made, they contain mostly ground up minerals such as marble or quarts. They are highly stain resistant, very dense and hard and look just like genuine stone.
A Broad Price Range
Another added benefit of these cultured stone countertops is that joints where two pieces are connected together are completely invisible. The price on todays stone countertops runs the gamut from incredibly pricey to quite reasonable, which means that no matter what your decorating budget is, there is a stone countertop that will fit beautifully into your decorating scheme.
