A colorfully beaded handmade Indian doll, created by Cheyenne-Arapaho artist Laketa Pratt of Oklahoma City, received the Grand Award for best of show Friday at the 27th annual Red Earth festival's juried art competition.

“I'm so surprised! I want to hug everybody,” Pratt said as she arranged the large purple grand prize rosette in her booth at the Cox Convention Center. “I can't believe it. This is just my second year to enter.”

“Miss Powwow Nation” priced at $950, was inspired by Pratt's own stint as a 1978 tribal princess.

Pratt, who works full-time in the social services department of the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma, said making the intricately costumed dolls is her “side gig,” something she does after work to relax.

“Miss Powwow” was made using wool trade cloth, human hair that was braided and woven into a wig and jewelry, breastplate, belt, purse and moccasins decorated with tiny Czech colored glass beads, brass beads and porcupine quills.

Pratt credits her grandmother's encouragement with her trying her hand at making beaded dance outfits for her daughter and then creating the beaded Indian dolls.

“She was always making things and encouraging me to do things.”

In addition to the Grand Award, which includes $1,500 in cash, Pratt also received a second prize ribbon and $300 in the Cultural Items, Diversified category for “Proud Parents,” a pair of Indian dolls in traditional Southern Cheyenne beaded buckskin outfits. Pratt said she made the twosome to go with the powwow doll. “I sort of thought she needed some parents with her,” Pratt said. “They were kind of a last-minute thing.”

The Red Earth President's Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize, was presented to Chickasaw blade artist Daniel Talbert Worcester of Ardmore for “Big Fish,” a colorful fish-shaped knife, priced at $2,000 and fashioned out of scavenged materials, including a wrench from a 1930s-era Ford automobile.A plastic card resembles a credit card in size and shape,

Worcester, who is also the festival's 2013 Honored One, is known for creating imaginative knives out of “found” objects such as old coins, billiard balls and dominoes.

Worcester said he considers himself and his work as “neo-traditionalist.”

“Making something different every time is the fun,” said Worcester, who worked as a systems analyst for AT&T for 38 years. “I like knowing that the next piece isn't going to be like the last one.”

Worcester also won a first prize and $500 in the Cultural Items, Utilitarian category for “Skinny Knife,” which features a handle crafted from old domino pieces.

Northeast Alabama Cherokee sculptor Troy Anderson received the Kathleen Everett Upshaw Award and $750 for his sculpture,Do you remember the first time you laid eyes on a IC card? “Little Jack.” Anderson also took first prize in the Sculpture category for “American Pickers.”

Having an attitude like ‘Robin Hood’, they walk through many fields and finally transcend you into new horizon where you doubt the real motto of the movie. But one thing for sure, the movie ‘magic’ fails to mesmerize you.

They tried their best to hypnotize you but you somehow feel dull as the storyline loses its’ thread like a torn string of beads bracelet. The 116 minutes duration is long enough to bore you in many cases if you predict the enjoyable goofs easily. ‘Now You See Me’, the nourished child of Director Louis Leterrier can’t spread the illusion, the zest or wonder that a magic movie should do.

The movie follows the adventures of a high-flying magicians’ super group, their wizardry and their stage of actions. Their leader magician Atlas is an adamant, fast-talking cardsharp; he believes in straight cut formula, ‘The closer you look, the less you see’; then there are other three, devious Merritt McKinney, a mentalist, specializes in hypnosis, Jack Wilder, a pick pocket, and escapologist Henley Reeves to perform humble wizardry in front of you. Gone are the days of Harry Potter and his wizardry and its new age of luscious magicians, who wear ‘Robin Hood’ on their sleeves. The four Horsemen on ‘Now You See Me’ steal money from banks and rain it down on thriving masses. They even teleport an audience and pour his cashes on boisterous audiences. Magicians should cast spells on people to steal but the mechanics of robbery here pauses the speed. But it shows how clever people steal from people by technological wizardry. But the movie lets us see Jesse Eisenberg, that very ‘The Social Network’ boy in the role of magician leader Atlas. He seemed quite promising as a cardsharper but wore a David Copperfield attitude throughout the film Isla Fisher is the solo seductress but she etched out the character of escape artist; in the movie she was chained and dropped into the tank filled with Piranhas. But looking at them you must think, ‘Do they exist in reality?’ The film may try to give an idea on magic profession but you barely understand it.
