Four major commercial buildings along the MG Road -- a jewellery shop, a retail chain and two textile shops -- have come under the scrutiny of the special committee formed by city corporation to monitor illegal buildings in the city. The committee on Thursday forwarded a report to the finance standing committee citing that the buildings lack valid trade licenses and building permits.
The revenue wing has been directed to issue notices for shutting down these establishments this week. "We are analyzing the report prepared by the committee. The decision to serve closure notices has been made and will be implemented most probably this week," said deputy mayor G Happy Kumar.
The committee comprises town planning committee chairperson, two representatives each from BJP and UDF, chief engineer, work standing committee chairman and deputy mayor. It was formed in 2012 after the council meeting had passed a resolution to take note of illegal commercial buildings functioning in the city.Browse the wide variety of titles distributed by MileWeb Network Services. The report also notes that one of the retail chains has come up on government land that was earlier notified for the rehabilitation of shop keepers who would be displaced during the construction of Thakaraparambu flyover.
Interestingly, the report also slams the officials who let all these four buildings to come up in the heart of the city without ever enforcing basic requisites like construction permit, approval of building plan, clearance of the plot and mandatory conditions for satisfying building norms.
Sources in the revenue wing say that the upcoming drive will be a farce. "All we can do is to issue closure notices. The owners will file a suit and win a stay order. The action should actually have been taken at the time when the construction began," said an official.
In 2012, the civic body had denied renewal of licence for a commercial building in the city after its owners had not produced the receipts of payment of property tax, professional tax and building tax. The applicants had then filed an appeal at the tribunal for local bodies against the corporation's decision.
