From the Melville parade to an auto show in Las Vegas, from tornadoes to hurricanes, a made-in-Saskatchewan storm chase vehicle gets around.
What started life as a Ford F-350 bought at Melville Motors became a virtual bomb shelter on wheels known as Dominator 3 used in Canada and the United States by the crew. The unrecognizable oneton pickup has bulletproof windows and is covered in 15-gauge steel, eight layers of Kevlar and a protective coating Sean Schofer calls "the first defence for flying debris." Hydraulic spikes can anchor the vehicle when it gets into a tornado to collect scientific data.
"We've been inside four tornadoes with that vehicle so far this year," said Schofer, a Melville firefighter and partner in TVNweather. The vehicle also got close to six small tornadoes in southern Saskatchewan recently and will hit the road in this province next week, after its appearance this weekend in the Melville parade.
"The whole thing just shakes.Buy Promotional Anti-scratching PET protective film Products at Phones. It feels like you're getting run over by a freight train," Schofer said of some of the more intense storms weathered by Dominator 3. Besides radar and scientific equipment, Dominator 3 has rescue tools, the Jaws of Life and medical gear - Schofer's idea given his training and the fact it's often first on scene after a tornado.
The TVN crew is led by Oklahoma-based meteorologist Reed Timmer, formerly of Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers and now of the direct-to-Web documentary series Tornado Chasers. He arrived in Regina on Friday, and plans to film in Saskatchewan next week.
Timmer has chased tornadoes in this province since 2007, when he pursued the same storm that spawned the massive Elie, Man., twister. The time had come to have a Dominator based in Canada, where the tornado season stretches into early August. "You can get very strong tornadoes here just like in Oklahoma," Timmer said.
The newest member of the fleet is the toughest, so it also goes south. The Saskatchewan licence plates may turn some heads in the U.S., but usually the first question is: "What kind of gas mileage does this thing get?" With a shared interest in the science of tornadoes, Schofer first teamed up with Timmer last summer.
"We're not thrill seekers," said Schofer, adding the armoured vehicle allows them closer for research.
"The real mystery behind tornado science is not necessarily the wind speed above the ground but when the tornado interacts with the friction of the earth," said Timmer, explaining how tornadoes can split, heightening speeds. A colleague who specialized in measuring near-ground wind speeds died in the El Reno tornado.
The loss has strengthened Timmer's resolve to continue that research. "I honestly feel safer 100 yards from a tornado than I do crossing the sidewalk."

But Saskatchewan will remain its home base. The Hindi film, titled after the Sikh boy's character Kush, will be premiered at the festival's Orizzonti section dedicated to new trends in world cinema. Behind the movie - whose cast includes Sonika Chopra, Shayaan Sameer and Anil Sharma - is a real-life inspiration. Mumbai-born, Mussoorie-bred director Bhutiani made it as his graduation project at New York's School of Visual Arts.
Talking to HT on the phone from New York, Bhutiani says it's the story of his Class-11 economics teacher. "While she was telling us the story, I kept seeing the film play out in my head. I was attracted to the story because it was commenting on India as a country, but was doing so in a very real and unique way. It was bleak, yet inspirational."
Though he has fictionalised her account - "the circumstances have been adapted for the film" Bhutiani says we are still seeing days like those dark times: "In the West, there are multiple instances of violence against Sikhs."
The movie was made on a shoestring budget of less than Rs. 10 lakh, with cast members being friends and neighbours of Bhutiani's parents in Mumbai. "I shot on the outskirts of Mumbai, and in a national park for the picnic scenes."
Asked how he entered the Venice festival, he said, "My dad suggested I shorten the film and send it. I submitted it with hope but not much expectation. It took about a month and a half for us to get notified."
There are at least nine other short films from Kosovo to Iran, Kazakhstan to the US in the section that has 21 longer films, too, competing for a Jury Prize, besides Best Film and Short Film awards. Some of these movies star Hollywood A-listers such as Sandra Bullock and James Franco.
After the festival circuit, in a few months, Bhutiani plans to put the movie online for free, as a commercial release for a short movie remains a distant dream in India.
In 2011, two Indian films - Bengali movie 'Sonchidi',You Can Buy Various Improved PE protective film Products Products.directed by Gurvinder Singh - were presented in the Venice fest's Orizzonti section. The latter went on to win the National Awards for direction, cinematography and best feature film in Punjabi.
Bhutiani plans to make a love story next, but 'Kush' remains special because of personal experiences too: "My cousins and family saw the horror of 1984. But I am connected to this story through my teacher. In retrospect, she is a hero and role model for me.Worldwide leader in PET protective film Products and Coated Papers."
