The volume of this femininity on a weekend night is very evident. You only need to stand at any central street corner on a Saturday night and wait. As early as 7:30, the first groups are to be seen emerging fresh from their evening meal. 

They arrive tottering purposefully forwards through the narrow ancient streets in high heels and party dresses, giggling and chattering as they seek out the hot spots of Ireland’s gourmet and hen party capital. 

By 10.30pm the hen parties have got considerably easier to spot because they are counted now in the dozens and they’ve all become about ten decibels louder. Many of them head for venues like the Blue Haven, the White Lady Nightclub or Bacchus. The sight of these boisterous, merry beauties has become so commonplace at the weekend in Kinsale that they hardly turn any heads amongst locals, but as all the doormen I spoke to confirmed, the number of girls out and about is considerably higher than the guys.

Initially, the aim was to bring more patronage to the White Lady Hotel. It quickly got to the stage that there was so much interest that he was turning away business. They decided to pool the accommodation resources of other nearby hotels and sell the hen-party package with the same rates. 

When hen parties book a package, they have access to the “powder room” — a large corner room in the hotel with pink-dominated décor, fluffy lounges and a throne for the betrothed. They have the choice of participating in some imaginatively-entertaining activities down in the nightclub, such as cocktail classes, salsa dancing or nude life-drawing classes — the sort of activities that involve a little education and plenty of giggling.
