  • A lot of people like to criticize the city

More than a century ago, what is now known as Sacramento's River District was known for flooding.
In the 1930s, it was known for canning. Later, it became a gritty mix of working factories and derelict buildings, close to downtown but isolated and often forgotten.Explore the benefits of having a fully managed dedicated server as your platform.
But now, the 830-acre district north of the historic railyard and Sacramento's downtown core is seeing an influx of residential, office and commercial land-use projects.
In recent years, a new road and a light-rail extension have provided better connection to the rest of the city. More than $450 million has been invested in the district through public and private projects, bringing along more than 1,000 new jobs.
Patty Kleinknecht, executive director of the River District nonprofit association representing business and property owners, said the area's transformation has been the result of a "genuine partnership" among businesses, developers, transportation officials, government leaders and urban planners.
"Particularly over the last five years, we've seen smart growth, mixed-use development close to the business center of our region, with easy access to a lot of different forms of transportation," Kleinknecht said.
Long-established companies still dot the area, including the venerable Blue Diamond Growers cooperative, dating back to 1910. But recent arrivals have been numerous, adding a modern vibe to the district.
They include the California Lottery headquarters building, an imposing structure with curving exterior lines, hundreds of square feet of blue glass and aluminum, and LED lighting.
Inside the building, food truck operator Krush Burger opened a brick-and-mortar restaurant late last year.
The Party Concierge, the special event services/amenities business whose facilities burned in an August 2012 fire, has reopened nearby in a 42,000-square-foot building at 601 N. 10th St. The significantly upgraded building features modern architectural touches inside and out, including ceiling-high windows letting in natural light.
Last year, a new light-rail station opened at Seventh Street and Richards Boulevard. The open-air brick-and-metal structure, topped by a Township 9 sign that lights up at night, has the look of a train stop in a European capital.
The station borders the 65-acre Township 9 mixed-use development site, where construction continues on the Cannery Place Apartments, a 180-unit, $40 million development that also will include retail.desirable Cases for HTC One create an air of sophistication with an extra helping of protection for your flagship smartphone. Construction is expected to be completed in October next year.
Steve Goodwin, president of the River District board of directors and Township 9, uses the word "momentum" repeatedly when describing the area.
"That's momentum … from more employment, more businesses, more services and more investment," he said.
Goodwin remembers a different time, when the decades-old Tri-Valley Growers cannery was being readied for the wrecking ball, clearing space for Township 9 work.
"We've been here for about 14 years now, and back then, well, it was kind of a dump. It was considerably more blighted,Series cases for iphone 5 protects against drops and dust." he said. "There was a lot yet to be done. It was really in its infancy in terms of its redevelopment."
Numerous projects, including a widening of Richards Boulevard, altered the district, but Goodwin points to the Seventh Street extension project, completed in March 2004,Browse and search wholesale fashion shoes images. as the key milestone.
"That connected downtown with the district, and that was very important.Extend the power on your iphone 5 back cover juice pack. Before that, we were sort of on an island. But that Seventh Street punch-through changed everything."
Goodwin praised the city of Sacramento: "The city has been great. They really helped move the pieces that needed to be moved in the right direction, with grant dollars and everything else.
"A lot of people like to criticize the city, but when you look at everything that has been done, it represents years of advance planning and hard work."
Steve Cohn, Sacramento City Council member for District 3, which includes the River District, noted that the area's long history has been filled with up and downs, including businesses upset with riverside campers and crowds of homeless at Loaves & Fishes, the in-district charity.
But now, Cohn says, the district is taking on a distinctive look: "There's so much going on, and you have to remember that it has been an industrial site for years, and therefore was kind of neglected. … Now and looking at the future, we're really seeing this transformation from industrial to mixed use in a very desirable environment that doesn't ignore the rivers."
Township 9 is a joint project of Sacramento-based Nehemiah Corp. of America and Sacramento developers Goodwin and Ron Mellon.
Not surprisingly, Goodwin considers Township 9's long-term development – a potential $2 billion enterprise – as a capstone for the River District, with a planned mix of housing, office space and retail: "Township 9 was catalytic from the beginning, coming in to create something different than what anybody expected to be built out here."
Beyond development dollars, grants and new construction, Goodwin says the River District has more down-to-earth things going for it: "The business owners all know each other, like each other and respect each other. It's always been a fun place to do a development like this."
"We love the River District," said Susan Crane. "For sure, they've made us feel like family. Even after the fire (last year) and when we were working out of trailers waiting to move into this building, we knew we wanted to stay in this location."
Susan Crane said River District officials surprised her last week with an impromptu welcome-back party, complete with confetti: "That's the kind of people they are, welcoming us back to the neighborhood."

  • They echoed concerns about an erosion of trust

Current and former cybersecurity officials say they worry the ongoing disclosures about secret National Security Agency spying programs by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden could trigger hasty or rash actions by Congress or the private sector,Explore the benefits of having a fully managed dedicated server as your platform. hampering efforts to enact an effective cyber policy.
The Obama administration, lawmakers and the private sector in recent years have been negotiating how the government and industry should partner to protect critical infrastructure like power plants against a growing threat of cyber attacks.
Despite the emerging consensus that U.S. cyber defenses must be improved, the conversation has sputtered amid disagreements about liability and privacy protections, the creation of new industry standards and other critical elements.
Now, cybersecurity leaders say the leaked details of the vast scope of NSA's online data gathering may hamper efforts to draft cyber policies, such as greater information-sharing between government and industry.
"It's opened up a big can of worms about what the government's role is, which is already a big open question in cyberspace," said Bruce McConnell, the Department of Homeland Security's Acting Deputy Undersecretary for Cybersecurity. "I don't think this is going to be helpful in making Congress, who tends to be risk-averse, forge new policy agreements."
"The Snowden revelations have made the Congress more uncomfortable with providing clear authorities to the government," McConnell told Reuters on the sidelines of the SINET Innovation Summit in New York on Tuesday.
The House of Representatives made the first legislative challenge to NSA's data gathering in July through an amendment to the defense appropriations bill.
The proposal, opposed by the White House and the intelligence community, failed by a narrow 12-vote margin. In private conversations, government officials said they hope Congress does not "let a good crisis go to waste." Instead, they want to use the heightened public attention to cyber operations to spur a constructive conversation about better cybersecurity.
"It is sensitizing people to ask the question, 'what is the role of government?' It's forcing that dialogue to happen," Douglas Maughan, who runs the cybersecurity division at the Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate, told Reuters at SINET.Series cases for iphone 5 protects against drops and dust.Customized MileWeb Promotion Dedicated Server offer you a wide.
The House recently passed a bill that would increase the sharing of cyber threat information between the private sector and the government. But in a repeat of last year's failed attempt to pass such a law, the White House has threatened to veto the bill over privacy concerns. The Senate has yet to introduce its version of an information-sharing bill.
Both Maughan and McConnell, who is leaving DHS for the EastWest Institute,Provision and deploy cloud MileWeb Public Cloud Servers in minutes. a think tank focused on conflict resolution, said Snowden's revelations have so far not hurt the department's cybersecurity partnerships with the private sector.Promotion MileWeb Customized Dedicated Server are quality hardware and truly. But they expressed worries about what Congress might do next.
"That's the concern, that people are going to have a knee-jerk reaction and try to rush a legislative remedy," Maughan said.
Mark Weatherford, who preceded McConnell at the DHS before joining the Chertoff Group consulting firm this year, said the lack of major NSA-related legislative proposals shows appreciation of the value of digital intelligence gathering, which officials say has helped thwart numerous terrorist plots.
But he agreed that public concerns over the scope of government surveillance online convolute policy progress.
"We are in a more complicated debate now," Weatherford said. "It's going to take a couple of years to recover from the perception that the government is overreaching."
Some private sector cybersecurity executives also concede that trust in government's handling of private data has suffered from Snowden revelations. They echoed concerns about an erosion of trust expressed by prominent hackers and cyber experts at two major security conventions in recent weeks.
"All the policies are stepped backwards," SINET founder Robert Rodriguez told Reuters. "You've got to build the trust again."

  • The previous draft prohibited bartenders

Police Chief Kevin Wilkinson renewed his push for a sober-server ordinance last week, but the proposal takes a less-stringent stand than the one that drew the ire of tavern owners in February.
The new ordinance would prohibit bartenders from serving while intoxicated, which is defined as having a blood-alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more.
The previous draft prohibited bartenders from serving if they had a blood-alcohol content of 0.04 percent or more, and it forbade bartenders from drinking alcohol while on duty.
Only four Wisconsin communities — Madison, La Crosse, Jackson and Kenosha — have sober-server ordinances,Center Facilities MileWeb Privacy Policy MileWeb Privacy Policy. and none goes as far as 0.04 percent.
“We’ve scaled it back to what’s been done across the state,” City Attorney Jim Godlewski said.
The city’s Public Services and Safety Committee voted 4-1 to recommend adoption of the ordinance to the Common Council, which will consider it tonight.
Alderwoman Cari Lendrum said the ordinance is a compromise between the wishes of residents and the interests of tavern owners.
“We’re not doing nothing, but we’re not being heavy-handed,Find business contact information and MileWeb Contact Us By Phone,” Lendrum said.
Tavern owners found the revisions more palatable,Explore the benefits of having a fully managed dedicated server as your platform. but that doesn’t mean they support the ordinance.
Ricky Jacquart, president of the Winnebago County Tavern League, said the ordinance is unnecessary and amounts to overregulation. He said the impetus for the ordinance — a fight last September at the former Chief’s tavern in which a police officer was punched in the face — was an isolated event.Series cases for iphone 5 protects against drops and dust.
“Because of one incident, we’re being crucified,” Jacquart said.
Afterward Jacquart rallied tavern owners to speak against the ordinance when it reaches the council today.
Wilkinson said the ordinance would empower Neenah to hold bartenders accountable for their behavior. In the fight at Chief’s last fall, police had no grounds to cite the bartender for intoxication because the city has no law against it.
Currently, individual taverns might prohibit employees from drinking or being intoxicated while on duty, but if a bartender violates that policy, the city has no recourse.
“The employer may discharge the employee,” Wilkinson said, “but the employee would still have a license to serve, providing MileWeb Services Overview and unprecedented. issued by the city, good at any licensed establishment in town.”
With the sober-server ordinance, the city could cite the bartender for a violation and could suspend or revoke a bartender’s license for repeated violations.
Wilkinson said if the ordinance passes, Neenah police would not routinely enter taverns to give preliminary breath tests to bartenders. He said it would be a secondary investigation.
“If we get called there for a fight and the officer sees that the bartender appears to be intoxicated, then they’re going to give that test,” Wilkinson said, “but we’re not going to go into every bar in town at 10 o’clock at night and run PBT checks on the bartenders.”

  • The company is also counting on Hadoop

Supercomputer and high-density server maker Silicon Graphics is still not back on track to profitability, but CEO Jorge Titinger says he knows what to do: Back away from the knife fight of providing infrastructure to public cloud providers and focus on commercial HPC systems,Explore the benefits of having a fully managed dedicated server as your platform. related big data systems, and the storage that sits behind both.
In a conference call going over SGI's financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2013, which ended in June, Titinger said that the company's public cloud business accounted for around $200m in revenues during that fiscal year, and that it would likely shrink over time.
It's common knowledge that Amazon is SGI's largest public cloud customer and that it accounts for the lion's share of SGI's sales to cloud providers. Amazon was not mentioned by name in this call, but clearly SGI is not willing to give it the pricing it wants on its servers, not even when this unnamed "largest cloud customer" bought $139m in iron in fiscal 2013, exceeding expectations.
If you do the math, public cloud providers accounted for 27 per cent of total sales in the fiscal fourth quarter, or about $46m, but Titinger said the company expects sales to public cloud providers to shrink by $25m to $30m in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. This is a stunning drop.Fun sell a huge range of Cases for iPad 4, With that kind of decline – and let's assume a worst case scenario – the cloud business might be on the order of $70m to $80m in fiscal 2014. Or it might be even lower, depending on the margin pressure.
Titinger doesn't want Wall Street to freak out after hearing this news, and frankly, with open source hardware available through contract manufacturers in Asia, it's not really much of a surprise. The plan is for SGI to move up the value stack, leveraging its UV 2000 shared memory systems, its ICE X clusters, and InfiniStorage arrays in core HPC markets and emerging big data and quasi-HPC markets at government agencies and corporations.
"We have learned that UV is highly differentiated in big data," Titinger said on the call, adding that UV system sales were lower than expected in fiscal 2013 but were ramping and would see revenue growth in fiscal 2014.
He did not provide revenue figures for the UV machines,Extend the power on your iphone 5 back cover juice pack. which use SGI's own NUMAlink 6 interconnect to glue Intel Xeon E5-4600 processors into a big, bad system with 2,408 cores and 64TB of main memory.Series cases for iphone 5 protects against drops and dust. But Titinger did say that the UV pipeline now stood at $200m, and while all of that business will not close in fiscal 2014, a good portion probably has to for SGI to make its numbers.
A number of customers are exploring the use of UV systems as big, shared-memory virtualized systems running open source software; the idea is to splurge on the iron and go cheap on the software and get a more flexible system to boot.
The super-dense ICE X Xeon clusters are another bright spot that SGI is counting on to fill the gaps left behind by its cloud infrastructure shrinkage. Titinger did not give the size of the ICE X pipeline, but said that it generated around $100m in sales in fiscal 2013 and that the plan was for this line to grow around 20 per cent in fiscal 2014. Much of the sales will come in the second half of the fiscal year, due to the budgetary timing of some large deals.
SGI wants to be careful with the ICE X line, of course. It was over-enthusiasm over the "Sandy Bridge" Xeon E5 chips and the very excellent designs of the ICE X machines that got the company involved in $87m in low-margin deals that forced a restructuring of the company and brought Titinger in as CEO in February 2012. These LMDs of profit destruction have largely been booked and the issue has been dealt with.
The company is also counting on Hadoop big data munching to be a growing business, and says it has installed tens of thousands of server nodes running commercial Hadoop installations.
Add it all up, and the big data, HPC, and storage businesses are expected to grow around 15 per cent in fiscal 2014, making up for the difference in the lost public cloud sales and – here's the kicker – at a higher gross profit margin. That's the plan, anyway, and here's to hoping it all works out.
In the quarter ended in June, SGI's revenues were down 5 per cent to $170.5m. Product revenues were down 4 per cent to $129.2m, while services revenues were off 8.1 per cent to $41.3m. Within the product segment,Protect and connect your Samsung smartphone with samsung cases. compute represented 86 per cent of revenues, or about $111.1m, while storage made up the remaining $18.1m. SGI posted a net loss of $4.5m, which is considerably better than the $18.4m loss it had in the year-ago period.
For the full year, SGI had $767.2m in revenues, up 1.9 per cent, and booked a net loss of $2.8m compared to a net loss of $24.5m in fiscal 2012.
It is safe to say that Titinger and CFO Bob Nikl have nearly turned the company around, and are not going to be tempted to give Amazon or anyone else the cheap iron they crave just for the sake of making them happy and SGI's own shareholders miserable.
Looking ahead, SGI is expecting revenues for the first quarter of fiscal 2014 to be in the range of $160m to $170m, and that is with the big cut in spending by cloud customers. For the full year, SGI says to expect around 8 to 10 per cent growth and that, on a non-GAAP basis ignoring restructuring and stock compensation costs, will bring in at least $1 of earnings per share.

  • This new approach would definitely make breaches

"Traditional two-factor authentication protocols require a shared secret between the user and the service. A weakness of these protocols is that the shared secret can be compromised if the server is compromised," explains Twitter security engineer Alex Smolen. "We chose a design that is resilient to a compromise of the server-side data’s confidentiality: Twitter doesn’t persistently store secrets, and the private key material needed for approving login requests never leaves your phone."
"Also, our updated login verification feature provides additional information about the request to help you determine if the login request you see is the one you’re making," he points out.
The only thing you need to use this new solution is the newest version of the Twitter app for iOS (v5.9) or Android (v4.1.4). As with the previous solution, the feature can be turned on in the Settings.
Once you choose to do so, you will be first urged to store a generated backup code in a safe place so that you can access your account even if your phone has been stolen, lost, or is broken.
From that moment on, you will be using the Twitter app to approve requests each time you sign in to with your login credentials.
"When you enroll, your phone generates an asymmetric 2048-bit RSA keypair, which stores the private key locally on the device and sends the public key, which Twitter stores as part of your user object in our backend store, to the server," Smolen describes the login verification process.
"Whenever you initiate a login request by sending your username and password, Twitter will generate a challenge and request ID –– each of which is a 190-bit (32 alphanumerics) random nonce –– and store them in memcached. The request ID nonce is returned to the browser or client attempting to authenticate, and then a push notification is sent to your phone, letting you know you have a login verification request."
You can then review the request, which contains details such as the time when the request was made, the geolocation from which it was made, the browser that was used, and the login request’s challenge nonce, you can either approve or deny it.
"If you approve the request, the client will use its private key to respond by signing the challenge. If the signature is correct,Extend the power on your iphone 5 back cover juice pack. the login request will be marked as verified. In the meantime, the original browser will poll the server with the request ID nonce.Protect and connect your Samsung smartphone with samsung cases. When the request is verified, the polling will return a session token and the user will be signed in," Smolen concludes.
Login verification with the previously mentioned backup code is also well thought out, so that potential attackers targeting Twitter servers can't generate one even if the access the data (more details and a helpful animated GIF that explains this verification process can be found here).
Finally, there will be some Twitter clients that will initially not support the new login verification directly, and for them you can generate temporary passwords via your Password Settings.
This new approach would definitely make breaches such as the one suffered by the company earlier this year less damaging, as decrypting the stored hashes would not get the attackers the login information they need to hijack users' accounts.

  • The very idea of a small box doing the job

With increasing regularity, multichannel video operators are experimenting with new ways to deliver programming and launch new channels with the least amount of capital expense and human resources. The current low-margin economics and highly competitive environment dictates it. This has led to the emergence of the so-called "channel-in-a-box" (CIB) category: a 1RU or 2RU system that is basically a video server on steroids. They offer the ability to automatically playout preprogrammed clip lists,The cases for iphone 5 remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. insert commercials at exactly the right time, add a channel or network ID logos and graphics, and even adjust audio levels. The cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual,
Another equally important benefit has been to help playout facilities around the world migrate their SD operations to the HD world cost-effectively and add new features easily. Initial concerns about reliability have also been overcome with the latest generation of server technology and software.
The very idea of a small box doing the job of a traditional automation system — costing many times more to install and maintain — was initially met with resistance from many automation system vendors (many of which now themselves offer CIB systems), but as next-generation playout centers and individual “barker” channels began to consider the integrated system technology, the trend could no longer be ignored. Broadcasters and program distributors need more automation capability to run their digital TV channels, they just don’t want to pay a traditional master control operator to do it.
Recognizing the sales potential, today there are more than two-dozen companies that offer some type of automated channel playout device (some traditional server vendors, others new to the category). All provide the benefits of simplified operations with fewer user interfaces for greater efficiencies, reduced rack space and lower power consumption (two critical issues for large playout facilities) and easily expandable functionality.
All of these systems, which address new file-based operations and the need for flexible business models, will be on display at the IBC convention in Amsterdam, Netherlands, next month.
Is automated playout from an unattended box an innovative new approach? Rush Beesley,Hivelocity offers reliable and affordable Windows windows dedicated server. president of RushWorks, doesn’t think so. He says his company has offered low-cost,Our handcrafted Cases for iPad 4 is inspired by the journals of our favorite artists. high-performance television production, automation and video streaming systems since 2001. For Beesley, a veteran broadcast engineer and founder of commercial insertion and automation system provider Sundance Digital, automated playout is not a new idea at all.
From 2001 to 2007 RushWorks systems (using software licensed from an overseas vendor) supported from one to four channels of automated playback of MPEG-2 files. The single chassis communicated with routing switchers via serial protocol and supported multiple GPI in and out ports. It also supported one on-screen display or crawl.
Then the company expanded the idea to include full-power broadcasting; LPTV stations, Public, Educational and Government (PEG) channel playback on cable systems, and Internet streaming. The Cases for HTC One to keep your aluminium clad device free of scratches. They wrote their own software starting in 2006, and rolled out the A-List Broadcast Automation and Streaming System in about a year, along with the complementary VDESK Integrated PTZ Production System for meetings, events and houses of worship. Then they migrated to Matrox OEM cards that support input and output, as well as several layers of graphic compositing that eliminated the need for outboard graphic devices.

The duo met at the East Van Farmers’ Market pie competition where Parsons took first prize for her blueberry goat cheese basil pie and Mateyko was selling her ice creams.
For the Pie Ice Cream Sammy, Parsons takes Mateyko’s ice cream, a slather of her pie filling and sandwiches them between flaky pie crust. You can find them at the Food Truck Fest on Sundays at the Pie Hole table.
Flavour combos have included blueberry basil ice cream with blueberry goat cheese basil pie filling; lemon ginger ice cream with blackberry rhubarb; vanilla ice cream with banana cream and caramel; vanilla ice cream rippled with chocolate pecan pie filling; vanilla with coconut cream custard and toasted coconut.
“The way I look at pies, you can put anything in it. The same with ice cream,” says Parsons. Where’s the bacon? I ask. “I’ve made maple French toast bacon pie,The Cases for HTC One to keep your aluminium clad device free of scratches.” she says. “I can easily do it.”
Mateyko began her ice cream journey when a friend gave her an ice cream maker. The cases for iphone 5 remains the most popular smartphone phone on the market. “I started making ice cream but I wasn’t going to eat litres and litres myself, so I’d share it. I enjoyed the process of making it; it’s like design,” says Mateyko who took design at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
Soon, Mateyko was delivering ice cream every Sunday to customers on top of working as a server at L’Abattoir restaurant. Thus, Sunday Morning Ice Cream was born. She also sells at the Food Cart Fest and pop-up food events. Some of her flavours have included Breakfast of Champs,Our handcrafted Cases for iPad 4 is inspired by the journals of our favorite artists. Thai tea and a vegan one called coconut horcheta.
Her ice cream is becoming rather promiscuous. Yes, pie is a classic mate but Mateyko’s ice creams have been found between pillowy macarons at Beaucoup Bakery. And after she delivers them to her customers, who knows what kind of mating goes on.
There’s a new-found interest in ice cream and creative minds are excited. And it’s not just about perfecting the ice cream base. Vancouver’s Bella Gelateria has already brought home top gelato prize in a competition with the Grand Masters of gelato in Italy last year!
At home, my go-to ice creamy dessert this summer of sunshine is a glace, a concoction of whipped cream, Italian meringue, cherries and chocolate bits; I’ve also been made chocolate hazelnut ‘fudgsicles’.
At Bella Gelateria, Anna Ng is standing in line for a gelato fix, as is her wont in summer. Today, she’s wants more than a gelato cone. “That’s how they do it in Tehran,” says proprietor James Coleridge. “Some well-to-do Persians in Dubai have asked me to go and make it there.” Ng, though, will ask for a switch-up and request coconut gelato with shreds of coconut with the Persian wafers. “It’s got a lovely crunch as I bite into it,” she says. Bella Gelateria also does a mean affogato where a shot of espresso is poured over his award-winning gelato.
Ben Ernst and Erica Bernardi of Earnest Ice Cream started pedal-pushing their addictive ice cream about a year ago. They sold ice cream sandwiches and cones at farmers’ markets from a tricycle-powered ice chest. That is, until stores like Edible Canada, Harvest Community Foods, Cocoa Nymph Chocolates, Dirty Apron, Stong’s and Mighty Oak, among others, started selling them in refundable canning jars. The cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual, Of course, the ingredients are as local as possible. This month, they’re opening a shop at 24th and Fraser and to speed up their vehicular selling, they bought a red Japanese fire truck, equipped with a loudspeaker and two seats in the back.
“I’ve always loved ice cream,” says Ernst. “I just never thought I’d be making it.” Bernardi came along with her culinary arts degree and they set about addicting fans one flavour at a time. The people’s favourite is the creamy salted caramel. “My favourite is the 100 per cent Canadian whisky with organic hazelnuts from Agassiz,” says Ernst.
Ice cream sandwiches have lept beyond the chocolate wafer with vanilla ice cream standard. They’re showing their wild side. Tacofino sandwiching horchata ice cream.
At Beta 5 Chocolates, pastry chef Adam Chandler matchmakes shortbread and ice cream for seasonal ice cream sandwiches. How does bourbon-poached cherry ice cream between chocolate sound? His maple bacon ice cream sandwiches, which he sells to Meat & Bread were such a hit, customers complained bitterly when the restaurant removed it from the menu. It’s back on.
You might also catch Ashley Watson of Brown Paper Packages with her ice cream sandwiches at farmers’ markets, the Food Cart Fest and at Dukes on Broadway. “They’re decadent, curated and artisanal,” she says. “My hope is that each flavour is unique from what people have seen before. Everything’s made by hand and from scratch by me.” Her Tropical Thunder has coconut, rum and caramelized pineapple ice cream between coconut oatmeal cookies. White Turtle has vanilla bean ice cream between chocolate caramel pecan sea salt cookies. “And that’s just the beginning,” she says.
At Chocolate Arts, you’ll find a rectangular chocolate sandwich enrobed in a negligee of chocolate. The base layer is chocolate brownie. The middle is the ice cream made with local fruits and berries and it’s covered in dark chocolate.
In Burnaby, Ron and Roberta La Quaglia opened Glenburn Soda Fountain and Confectionery, a nostalgia period piece. They’ve brought back ice cream floats, malted shakes, milkshakes and banana splits. Tommy Dorsey, The Andrew Sisters and Perry Como transport you to the 1940s. They were surprised that the first of their fans were born some 50 years after the heyday of those musical artists.
“The first customers to arrive were of a generation who’d never experienced a soda fountain. They weren’t familiar with a real ice cream sundaes. Ours is served in a tall glass with real whipped cream. Malted shakes died off for a while but they’re really popular. The young people come in and say they love the music,” says Ron La Quaglia, who’s the chap behind the counter in the retro soda jerk white cap.
And if you like Popsicles, no sweat. Johnny’s Pops, a bicycle cart, sells gourmet versions. His flavours have included blueberry cardamom, strawberry balsamic, apricot caramel and banana pudding. He can be found at Olympic Village, in front of Tap and Barrel. You can’t miss it. Proprietor Johnny Wikkerink is six-foot nine and can wave you in.

  • Every time someone used the proxy

The botnet-type system is called HiveMind and was built by Sean T. Malone, a principal security consultant at penetration testing firm FusionX.Hivelocity offers reliable and affordable Windows windows dedicated server.
HiveMind uses technologies like HTML5 WebSockets and Web Storage that are also used by legitimate Web applications.Find the perfect leather or synthetic cellphone cases for your phone.
There are no malicious exploits being used, so there is nothing that can be patched to prevent it, Malone said. However, building the botnet by getting other people's browsers to load a piece of JavaScript code and storing data on their computers falls into a legally gray area,The Cases for HTC One to keep your aluminium clad device free of scratches. he said.
"This was a research project, not production software" he said. "I'm not a lawyer, so I don't intend to give anyone legal advice with this," he said, adding that everyone is responsible for what they decide do with the software he plans to release later this week.
The HiveMind JavaScript code can be distributed to browsers in several ways, including hosting the JavaScript code on legitimate or compromised websites or by distributing the code through an advertising network, which would place it on multiple websites.
For his research, Malone set up an anonymous Web proxy server that later got added to proxy lists and started being used by people. Every time someone used the proxy server to browse to a Web page, the server would inject the HiveMind JavaScript code into that page.
According to the researcher, his proxy server was getting connections from 20,000 unique IP addresses every ten minutes, which then became nodes in the botnet.
HiveMind has a C&C server that uses a SQL database to keep a record of all files and the nodes -- browsers running the JavaScript code -- they're distributed on.
When a file is uploaded to the server, it is encrypted using the AES with a password provided by the uploader. The encrypted file then gets split into multiple blocks and those blocks are distributed across different nodes.
Because the botnet is highly dynamic, with nodes constantly disappearing when users close their browsers, every file block is distributed across multiple nodes to achieve redundancy.
The nodes constantly announce their presence and the list of blocks they have back to the server, so that a particular block can be redistributed to new nodes if the number of nodes storing it drops under a certain threshold.
After a file is uploaded, encrypted and distributed to the nodes, it is no longer kept on the server. Only a record of the nodes that contain its different blocks is stored, because this is necessary to rebuild the file, Malone said. The cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual,
If a government agency were to seize the server and take it away, the block replication process would fail because the nodes would start going offline, which would make the file unrecoverable, Malone said. There are a few ways to recover the data, but it is very difficult and it involves seizing a large number of nodes or compromising the server while it's still online and coercing the owner to provide the passwords necessary to decrypt the files.

  • Comcast is hard at work attempting to gain

The film and music industries have been waging a war against file sharing through the courts for years, but have more recently started working with governments and ISPs to stop sharing at the source. The so-called “six strikes” copyright alert system (CAS) went live in the US earlier this year, but it has thus far failed to deter piracy. Comcast is now spearheading an effort to overhaul CAS and convert illegal downloads into paid ones. The cases for ipad mini is the latest exquisite release from Apple and as usual,
Under the current six strikes model, which most major ISPs participate in, a user is sent increasingly annoying warnings each time an instance of copyright infringement is detected. After five or six warnings, the ISP is authorized to slow the connection for a period of time,Hivelocity offers reliable and affordable Windows windows dedicated server. or even shut it off temporarily. This has proven to be a fairly weak deterrent by Comcast’s own measures. Going too far the other way comes with its own problems.
A number of European countries have instituted three strikes laws that carry harsh penalties for people suspected of repeated infringement. France was an enthusiastic supporter of its version of three-strikes called Hadopi. Under this system, a user would receive two warnings, then after a third alleged incident, their internet access would be cut off. Not only that, the users would end up on a blacklist that prevented other ISPs from providing service for at least a year. Hadopi has been widely criticized, and was recently scaled back.Find the perfect leather or synthetic cellphone cases for your phone. Now the third strike only triggers a small fine.
The conversion system as described by Comcast would use the same mechanisms to detect the sharing of copyrighted works, but instead of sending out a warning letter, it would take immediate action. A popup window would be pushed to the user offering the opportunity to rent or buy the content that was allegedly just downloaded for free. It might link to the cable provider’s own video-on-demand service, or an external one like iTunes or Amazon.
Comcast is hard at work attempting to gain support for it’s conversion strategy with other ISPs and content owners. It’s not hard to figure out why Comcast would be in favor of this move — it is both a content holder through its ownership of NBC-Universal, and an ISP with the Xfinity products.
For years the copyright holders in various industries treated infringement as a crime that deserved harsh punishment. Working from that starting point, individual users have been sued for millions of dollars for sharing a you need to perform we have every Replacement parts for iphone 5 at competitive prices.handful of songs. The Cases for HTC One to keep your aluminium clad device free of scratches. In some ways the new proposal assumes some piracy is simply a matter of convenience. If a pirate is provided with a quick and easy to to pay for the content, they might do so.
The Center for Copyright Information, a group of ISPs which back the alert system, has yet to take a position on Comcast’s new plan, but it has been made aware. Comcast believes the plan is workable, but will users respond to popup messages asking them to spend on what they just got for free?

The patent for Foley’s game explained, in laboured legalese, that each player would need “a considerable degree of skill,Shop wholesale Antistatic PET protective film Products from cheap Pet Protective. timing and coordinated muscular control, all in order successfully to make such body movements as to entwine his body in a pretzel-like manner around the body of an opponent so as better to force the said opponent,You Can Buy Various Improved PE protective film Products Products. because of his thereby being overpowered strengthwise or being forced into an awkward position, to break his posture or to lose his balance and to fall to the ground.” Happily, it was promoted under the snappier slogan “The Game That Ties You Up in Knots”, and — like an earlier games fad, the hula-hoop — Twister sold in millions.
Foley’s idea could hardly have been simpler: with each turn of a spinner, competitors on a plastic mat have to place their hands and feet on a particular coloured circle, forcing themselves into various contortions and, particularly in the case of adults, getting to know each other intimately while dispensing with formal introductions.
Foley devised the game in collaboration with a cartoonist, Neil Rabens, with whom he was working at a design company in the mid-1960s. He was casting around for an icebreaker at parties, to get people together rather than sitting or standing around in small groups. Twister, he said in 1998, “pulled people together. You take your shoes off and everybody’s equal — I don’t care who you are.”
Charles Frederick Foley was born on September 6 1930 in Lafayette, Indiana, and displayed a precocious talent for invention. At the age of eight he devised a latch that would automatically close a gate to pen animals on the family farm.
On leaving high school, he worked on a Ford assembly line, and after service with the Michigan Air National Guard was a salesman for a firm that cleaned furnaces for companies making products such as automatic cocktail shakers.
He was always thinking of new gizmos and gadgets to try out. “I was born with a gift,” he declared. Our offered BOPP Tapes are in compliance with the BOPP tape Products. “Ideas pop into my head.” When he fitted his 1952 Plymouth Belvedere car with homemade, three-colour rear lights — green for accelerating, amber for slowing down and red for stopping — the traffic policeman who booked him also offered his congratulations.
Foley’s other inventions included child-friendly darts with soft tips; plastic toy handcuffs; and a product called “un-du”, a liquid adhesive remover used by librarians to lift stickers,Buy Promotional Anti-scratching PET protective film Products at Phones. people who want to lift an unfranked stamp from a used envelope and anyone who — as in the product’s ultimate promotional test — needs to lift duct tape off single-ply lavatory tissue without tearing it.
For all his ingenuity, Foley lacked business acumen and cared little about money. He claimed that he made only $27,000 from the Twister game after a dispute over royalties with the owner of the design firm that employed him. His boss said he never promised Foley any royalties.
Being a boss never appealed to him. “I’d rather be in hell with my back broke,” he told one interviewer.
Growth in China's non--manufacturing sector picked up in July as China's recent support measures for small firms helped improve sentiment, though companies noted that inflation is rising and pushing costs higher, official data showed Saturday.
The government's non--manufacturing purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 54.1 last month from June's 53.9, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement. A reading above 50 indicates activity in the sector is accelerating, while one below 50 indicates it is slowing.
The services sector index followed the bureau's manufacturing PMI on Thursday, which showed China's factory activity was slightly stronger than expected in July.
The latest data indicates that "the non-manufacturing sector is improving, with the new orders sub-index consistently staying above 50, setting a good foundation in terms of demand for a stable growth," said Cai Jin, a vice-head of the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, which compiles the index on behalf of the NBS.
The services industry accounted for 46 percent of the Chinese economy in 2012 and overtook manufacturing as the biggest employer in 2011.
China's economic growth unexpectedly stumbled in the first half, as factory output and investment slowed.
To prevent it from slipping too far, the Chinese government has announced a series of targeted fine-tuning measures to safeguard growth. The Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, China's top decision-making body, has pledged stable economic growth in the second half as it presses ahead with reforms and restructuring to make domestic consumption the main driver of growth.
It has also announced several measures to support small firms, including scrapping business and value-added taxes for small firms, cutting red tape for importers and exporters, simplifying foreign exchange rules for the services industry and allowing small firms to issue more bonds.
The central bank has also pledged to improve the financial environment for small companies with innovation in financial products and services.
